Training your dog to sit is a relatively simple process, but it can take time for your dog to recognize that a certain word is actually a command for her to perform the action. You don't need advanced dog training skills to teach your dog the basics, but you do need some patience -- and a few dog treats -- to turn this into a successful training session.

1. Find a quiet place for your training session
The ideal location for your training exercise is in a quiet, distraction-free setting indoors. Get your pet to the location by placing a small treat in the center of the room and calling her inside.

2. Kneel down next to your dog
You will need to get down to your dog's level for the training to be effective. You will also need to get your dog's attention by holding a treat high above her head. This will make her stand up and try to reach the treat.

3. Lower the treat so that your dog has to sit to get it
The moment your dog sits down, say "sit" loudly and clearly, and then present her with the treat.

4. Praise your dog
You will need to praise your dog repeatedly for performing the action after the command, even though she was only doing it for the treat...for now.

5. Repeat the treat routine
Grab another treat and raise it above your dog's head. This time, say the command "sit" loudly and wait a few seconds. Some dogs will understand already, but if she doesn't, repeat step 3 again.

6. Repeat steps 3 through 5
You will need to repeat these steps at least three to four times so that your dog memorizes the pattern. You don't want to overdo this or she will get bored and will be much less likely to retain the information. The goal is to introduce her to this new routine so she can associate the action (sitting) with your command: "sit."

Engaging in some dog training sessions a few times per week is a great way to stimulate your pet's thinking, improve her intelligence and bond with her. Teaching a dog to sit on command can help your pet learn the basic rules of obedience. Once she has mastered this simple action, it will be much easier to move on to other exercises and activities.
